President Donald Trump told Air Force reporters on Friday that Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed to start sending rare earth minerals to the United States after halting cargo in April.
Trump made a joke on the president’s jet on Friday evening, and one reporter asked him just before landing, asking if XI agreed to restart the rare earth mineral and magnet flows into the US
“Yes, he did,” Trump replied. “We are making a great progress in China’s trading.”
The news is essential for assembling cars, robotics and defense systems in the United States, about a month and a half after China effectively halted exports of seven valuable minerals.

According to the New York Times, overseas delivery of magnets stopped on April 4th when the new licensing rules were in effect. Companies are permitted to export rare earth materials only if they obtain a special export license.
The halt also threatened to undermine Trump’s tariff strategy, as China produces another 90% of the world’s key mineral supply and processes.

China’s mineral halt came after Beijing had already imposed sanctions on several US military contractors late last year, according to Reuters. According to the outlet, Chinese entities were prohibited from engaging or cooperating with them in response to arms sales to Taiwan.
Trump and Xi made a long call Thursday amid economic and national security frictions over trade between the US and China.

“I concluded a very good call with Chinese President XI, discussing some of the complexities that have been created recently and agreeing to a trade deal,” Trump said Thursday in the Truth Social Post. “The call lasted about an hour and a half, bringing a very positive conclusion for both countries.”
Trump said the conversation focused primarily on trade.

The call comes a week after Trump denounced China for violating an early trade deal that the US hashed with China in May, and Trump said Xi “is very difficult to trade” in the true social post.
