Trump says Harvard foreign students come from a “nothing” country

President Donald Trump on Sunday criticized foreign countries for paying “nothing” for the education of citizens attending Harvard University and other US institutions.

This comes amid the battle between the Trump administration and Harvard over plans to revoke the university’s ability to register international students.

“Why, Harvard doesn’t say that almost 31% of students come from foreign lands, but those countries that are not at all friendly to the US have no intention of paying anything for their students’ education,” Trump wrote early Sunday morning about the true society. “No one told us that!”

“It’s a reasonable request since giving Harvard billions of dollars, but Harvard isn’t coming close to exactly,” he continued. “We want those names and countries. Harvard has $52,000,000. Stop using it and asking the federal government to continue to give you money!”

On Friday, a judge temporarily blocked the cancellation of Harvard’s student visa program after the university filed a lawsuit against the federal government.

Harvard argued that the policy would affect more than 7,000 visa holders (nearly a quarter of student groups), and argued that the administration’s efforts were “a blatant violation of the First Amendment, due process provisions, and the Administrative Procedure Act.”

“It’s the latest act by the government in explicit retaliation against Harvard to exercise its initial amendment rights to reject Harvard’s request to control the governance, curriculum, and its faculty and students,” Harvard wrote in the complaint.

The Department of Homeland Security has moved to termination of Harvard’s visa program as it is said that the university failed to provide an extensive record of student visa holders requested by its agents.

The required records include footage of protests involving student visa holders, even if they are not criminals, as well as disciplinary records of all student visa holders over the past five years.

The requested records also include footage or documents of illegal, dangerous or violent activities by student visa holders, records of threats, or footage of the disenfranchised of the rights of other student or university staff.

Harvard called the new policy “harmful” and accused it of leaving “decades of resolved practices” and appearing “without a reasonable explanation.” The university also said the policy was “suddenly implemented without the robust procedures the government has established to prevent this kind of upheaval in the lives of thousands of students.”

At least 12 Harvard students have revoked their student visas via campus protests. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said before Congress Tuesday that the administration had probably already revoked thousands, and that more would be revoked “pridefully.”

The administration has already frozen federal funding for nearly $3 billion in universities, primarily dedicated to research, over allegations that Harvard University has not responded appropriately to campus anti-Semitism in its protests and has not moved to eliminate diversity, equity and inclusive practices.
