WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — President Donald Trump said Sunday that he was “not kidding” about trying to serve his third term. This is the most clear indication that after it ended in early 2029, it is considering ways to violate constitutional barriers to continuing to lead the country.
“There’s a way you can,” Trump said in a phone interview with NBC News.
He also said, “It’s too early to think about it.”
After President Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected four times in a row, the 22nd amendment, which was added to the constitution in 1951, stated that “must not be elected more than twice to the office of the president.”
NBC’s Kristen Welker asked if one potential measure of his third term would run the Vice President of JD Vance to the top job and “pass the baton to you.”
“Well, that’s one,” Trump replied. “But there are other things. There are others too.”
“Can you tell me something else?” she asked.
“No,” Trump replied.
Trump previously had meditated on serving more than one term before, and generally made jokes to friendly audiences.
“Are you allowed to run again?” he said during the House Republican retreat in January.
