Trump says the Smithsonian is too focused on “How bad slavery is” – NBC Los Angeles

President Donald Trump said Tuesday he ordered his lawyers to conduct a review of the Smithsonian Museum, calling the portrayal of our history too negative and focused too much on “how bad slavery is.”

The president said the museum was to impose the “exactly the same process” in which his administration conducted university, and to reduce the “awakening” of the Smithsonians.

White House officials told NBC News Tuesday night that Trump plans to expand the museum’s reviews beyond Washington-based agencies, saying he “wakes up from the Smithsonian” and that he will go from there.

“The Smithsonian is out of control, everything that is discussed is how scary our country is, how bad slavery is, and not abused, nothing about success, nothing about brightness, or about the future,” Trump wrote of the true society.

“We are not going to allow this. I have directed my lawyers to go through the museum and start the exact same process that took place at universities and universities where tremendous progress has been made,” he added.

The Smithsonian did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The White House fought wars at several universities and has invested federal funds from schools such as Harvard, Columbia and Brown to claim that schools have nurtured an anti-Semitic climate and lowered the hammer of diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives. Some schools have agreed that the government is walking part of the DEI efforts, pledged to comply with federal government policies, and in some cases, to pay the government hundreds of millions of dollars.

Trump’s post is a week after his administration began conducting reviews of unprecedented exhibits at the Smithsonian ahead of its 250th anniversary to ensure that it adheres to Trump’s vision of history.

The Smithsonian received a letter signed last week by White House management and Budget Director Russ Vert, instructing officials at the museum to take over information about the exhibits and plans commemorating the 250th anniversary within 30 days.

We instructed staff to implement “content modifications” when necessary, including replacing “schismatic” languages.

NBC News discovered in May that at least 32 artifacts were exhibited at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture at the National Mall, prompting questions from historical leaders. One artifact included a book belonging to Harriet Tubman. This was filled with hymns that were believed to have been sung when guiding enslaved people to their freedom.

Last month, the museum deleted a placard referencing two card bullets each. The removal prompted protests.

Consisting of 21 museums, 14 educational research centres and zoos, the Smithsonian is the world’s largest complex of its kind. The majority of that funding comes from Congress, but its curatorial process is independent.

Rebecca Shabad contributed.
