Lawmakers say the Russian-Ukraine war is in a “stalemate” state

Jim Himez, D-Conn, ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee; will be taking part in Fox News Sunday to discuss Mike Waltz’s transition from national security advisor to UN ambassador.

President Donald Trump said the US could withdraw from peace talks with Ukraine and Russia if both sides show no progress.

Commenting in an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” which aired on Sunday, Trump told host Kristen Welker that there was “a tremendous hatred” between Ukraine and Russia.

The president says he hopes that a peace agreement is possible, but he has confirmed that the United States is not an indefinite mediator.

“We believe we’re close to one party, and we’ll have to look, although it may not be that close to the other parties,” Trump said. “On average, 5,000 soldiers are almost dying per week. They are not American soldiers. But I want to solve the problem.”

“How much time will you give both countries before you leave?” Welker asked.

“Well, I’ll say it, it’s okay, there will be times when I keep going, keep on being stupid,” Trump replied.

“Maybe we can’t do that,” he added. “There’s an incredible hatred. Kristen, we’re talking about an incredible hatred between these two men, so frankly, some of the soldiers have been fighting hard for three years among the generals.

The interview comes days after Trump blows up Russian President Vladimir Putin, he questioned whether his Russian counterparts were interested in peace.

Trump has argued that the Ukraine-Russia peace deal is near, but distrusts at skeptical experts about Putin’s departure

Trump spoke on social media last week after Russian troops launched missiles into Ukrainian cities.

“There has been no reason for Putin to fire missiles in civilian regions, cities or towns over the past few days,” Trump wrote. “Maybe he doesn’t want to stop the war, he’s just bashing me and I’m coming to think I have to deal with it differently through “banks” or “secondary sanctions.” Too many people are almost dying!!!”

President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Voldimia Zelensky will speak in Rome, attending Pope Francis’ funeral on April 26, 2025.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio also appeared to be easing expectations for a massive peace deal between Ukraine and Russia last week.

Rubio argued that it was “silly” to put a specific date or timeline where the US could withdraw from mediation, but he said this would be a “very important week.”

A few days later, the White House signed a rare earth minerals agreement with Ukraine, a month’s priority for Trump.
