President Donald Trump signed an executive order Tuesday demanding that people provide evidence of American citizenship when they register for the ballot and require that all votes be reviewed by Election Day.
The order requires government-issued evidence of U.S. citizenship on voter registration forms and directs the Attorney General to enter into information sharing agreements with state election officials to identify cases of federal election law violations and conditions or other election law violations and conditions regarding states that comply with federal election integrity measures.
“There are other steps we’ll take in the coming weeks,” Trump said just before signing the order. “I think we can get a fair election.”

“I’m honored to sign this,” he added. “I sign all of them, but signing this is a great honor.”
The United States has “failed to enforce basic and necessary election protections,” the order states.
Election experts quickly criticized the move, saying it would disenfranchise millions of voters.
“This executive order will block tens of millions of American citizens from voting,” the Brennan Center for Justice at New York University wrote. “The president has no authority to do this.
The American Voters Eligibility Act, known as the Conservation Act, is a bill promoted by Republicans who swept voter registrations, including requiring voters to present documents certifying US citizenship.

Citizenship documentary proofs include actual IDs indicating American citizenship or military, state or federal identification cards issued.
“Freedom, fairness and honest elections made harmless by fraud, error or doubt are fundamental to maintaining the Constitutional Republic,” the order states. “However, the United States has not properly enforced federal election requirements, for example, that prohibit states counting votes received after Election Day or prohibiting non-citizens from registering for the ballot.”

Under the terms of the order, Trump has directed the Election Assistance Committee to change its federal voter registration form to require evidence of citizenship issued by the government.
The order also attempts to prohibit mail-in voting by election officials receiving after election day.
