During a visit to Crocodile Alcatraz in the Florida Everglades swamp, President Donald Trump said California Gov. Gavin Newsom should visit the Sun State and “learn something” about suppressing illegal immigration.

“President. Governor, what is your message to Governor Gavin Newsom within this facility?” the reporter asked Trump as he toured detention facilities for illegal aliens, accompanied by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and secretary of Homeland Security Christie Noem.

“Well, the first thing he should do is come here and learn something because they don’t do this,” he said. “They don’t know where to start, and if that’s the case, it’s going to cost them more. So I’d say he should call the governor, Christie… his condition is a disaster.”

DeSantis added that California is home to the original Alcatraz, which could be equipped as an immigration detention center.

President Trump saw President Christa Noem and Governor Ron DeSantis on July 1, 2025 on “Crocodile Alcatraz.”

“They have the original Alcatraz so you can approve that he can set one of these over there, and I’m sure the secretary will be happy to do that,” DeSantis said.

Fox News Digital contacted Newsom’s office to respond to Trump’s remarks, but did not receive a reply immediately.

Trump visited “Wannial Catraz” on Tuesday ahead of his official grand opening on Wednesday. The detention center has won its name because it is located in the heart of the Everglades, home to giant reptiles such as crocodiles and pythons.

Under the emergency order, Desantis has approved the construction of an illegal immigration detention center at a 30-square-mile facility in the swamp of the Everglades in Miami-Dade County. The facility is a former airport equipped with a sturdy tent structure to house 5,000 illegal immigrants amid the Trump administration’s deportation blitz to remove millions of illegal immigrants who killed the country during the Biden administration.

Like DeSantis, Trump has long traded barbs with California governors for liberal West Coast leaders, including in June, when anti-ice riots swirled in Los Angeles.

Los Angeles was in violent riots on June 6, when federal immigration officials gathered in the city to launch an attack targeting illegal immigrants. But local leaders such as Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and Newsom quickly condemned the attack on public statements, offering words of support for the state’s illegal immigration.

The protests against the attack quickly fell into violence as rioters targeted and launched an attack on federal law enforcement officials.

Trump was also asked during tour to describe his relationship with DeSantis after the pair traded campaign barbs during the 2024 presidential election cycle. DeSantis ran as a Republican candidate in the race and bowed in January 2024.

US President Donald Trump will speak as secretary to Christa Noem (L) of the Department of Homeland Security.

“I’d say it’s 10,” Trump said. “We might have some small scratches, so I think it’s 10, maybe 9.9. … I think we have 10.”

“We’re doing well,” Trump added.

Desantis also added that he quickly supported Trump in the 2024 race after he bowed.
