What do you know

Junior AB Hernandez will become the only openly trans athlete to compete at CIF State Athletics Events on Friday and Saturday at Buchanan High School in Fresno County. Later on Tuesday, the CIF announced changes to competition rules at the state athletics championships this weekend, allowing more girls to participate. The organization said that when Hernandez competed in the state championships in triple jumps and long jumps, the decision was reached with a qualifying tournament held at the end of the weekend section.

President Trump issued a warning to California leaders on Tuesday against trans athletes at Julpa Valley High School.

Junior Track and Field Athlete AB Hernandez will become the only openly transgender competitor at the CIF State track and field competition at Buchanan High School in the Fresno County Community in Clovis, where qualifying events begin before the finals on Saturday.

Hernandez’s girls’ high school participation in the athletics competitions has been continued this week after weekend section qualifying, particularly from the chairman of the Chino Valley Unified School District and state legislators. On Tuesday, President Donald Trump threatened to withhold federal funds from California for the participation of transgender athletes in women’s sports, an obvious reference to Hernandez.

In The Truth Social Post, Trump threatened to withhold “massive federal funds” from California if the state fails to comply with an executive order that prohibits transgender athletes from participating in women’s sports. In this post, Hernandez didn’t mention by name, but he mentioned a trans athlete who is eligible to compete with the girls in the upcoming California finals.

More than a third of California’s budget comes from federal funding, according to the California Budget and Policy Center. The state’s 2025-2026 budget includes more than $170 billion in federal funds.

Trump also said he would talk to California Gov. Gavin Newsom about the subject. In March, the governor faced a pushback from LGBTQ+ supporters after telling conservative commentator Charlie Kirk that it was unfair for trans female athletes to compete in women’s sports. Newsom added that he has problems with the rhetoric surrounding the issue and does not consider California law on the issue a priority.

The CIF bylaws say that all students should have an opportunity to participate in CIF activities in a way that matches their gender identity. California law prohibits discrimination, including schools based on gender identity.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom is being fired following the unfolding of his new podcast, including conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Among them, two disgender athletes participating in women’s sports are “a matter of fairness,” Newsom said. Conan Nolan of NBC4 is in talks with the chairman of legislative LGBTQ Caucus MP Chris Ward (D-San Diego).

On Tuesday, the CIF announced its decision saying it had reached the end of the weekend section to implement the pilot entry process for the CIF State Athletics Championships. Under the pilot entry process, biological female athletes who won one next qualifying mark for the section’s automatic qualifying entries at the state tournament and did not meet the large mark for the section tournament were offered the opportunity to compete in this week’s championship.

“CIF values all student-athletes and continues to support its mission to provide students with opportunities to belong, connect and compete while complying with California law and education codes,” the CIF said in a statement. “With this in mind, CIF will implement the pilot entry process for the 2025 CIF State Athletics Championships.”

The top six athletes in each event will automatically qualify for the CIF State Championship.

It was not immediately clear whether the rule changes would apply to all events or to events that transathletes qualify for the Finals.

Hernandez first finished in a triple jump and long jump over the weekend at Moore Park High School, and competed in the CIF State Athletics Championships in both events. She was tied to fourth place in the high jump at the Masters tournament and was not eligible for the CIF State tournament in that event.

press. Trump has signed an executive order entitled “Turn Men out of Women’s Sports,” which aims to ban trans athletes from playing in women’s sports on Wednesday. Conan Nolan is reporting NBC4 News at 4pm on February 5th, 2025.

Hernandez ranked number one in the Triple Jump and number one in the Long Jump, and spoke with City News Service at Masters Meat.

“I will rule out the controversy at the tournament,” Hernandez told City News Service on Saturday. “I just relax, do what I can, polish, leave it all (in the field), just focus. Do what I can and rule out the controversy.”

Hernandez’s best mark in this year’s triple jump was set on May 17th in the 41-foot, 4-inch, CIF Southern Section Final, according to Athletic.net. Kiragrant Hatcher from St. Mary’s College High School in the Bay Area ranks second in the 40-foot, 10 1/2-inch jump. Lindsey Varner from Rancho Cucamonga High School ranks third in the season’s best 40 feet and 10 inches.

In the long jump, Hernandez ranks second in the March tournament in the 20-foot, 1 1/2-inch jump. Katie McGuinness of LA Canada High School is number one in the 20-foot, 4-inch jump.

Hernandez has been a member of the team for three years and as a sophomore, he finished third in the triple jump at the CIF State Athletics Games.

Hernandez was part of the Julpa Valley High School volleyball team in the fall, reaching the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section Division 8 Girls Volleyball Playoffs.

Sonja Shaw, president of the Chino Valley Unified School District and candidate for California’s public leadership, has expressed his opposition to Hernandez’s participation in the women’s event. She said the district would send a letter to the White House and demand President Trump’s intervention.

“We keep fighting, girls win,” Shaw told CNS. “Our district has already sent a letter to President Trump. One daughter is hurt and we asked him to intervene. This is a hill where we will be happy to die, and we are not standing alone.

“I will continue to file claims with the Civil Rights Office, the Department of Justice and the Department of Education. Proponents of faith and freedom have already filed lawsuits, and the California Family Council has launched a petition.”

Rancho Santa Margarita Republican Rep. Kate Sanchez introduced a bill in January that would have changed the CIF rules for trans athletes competing in high school sports. It would have banned athletes whose gender was assigned a male at birth in women’s sports, but the bill failed on April 2nd with a 7-2 vote.

Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention identifies approximately 3.3% of high school students as transgender.

City News Service contributed to this report.
