Two vehicles were seized over the weekend in connection with a possible road rage crash that killed a teenage cyclist in the parking lot of BMO Stadium at Exposition Park.
Authorities also said a 28-year-old man was being sought after an altercation between a driver and about 40 bicyclists near LAFC’s soccer stadium south of downtown Los Angeles on Friday. did. Both impounded vehicles were found Saturday at a residence where a search warrant was executed during the investigation.
There were no reports of arrests early Monday. The person sought for the crime was not identified by police.
“Preliminary reports suggest there was an altercation between a bicyclist and a blue BMW on Figueroa Street, north of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard,” the CHP said in a statement. “One of the cyclists was entering a parking lot on the Expo Park grounds when he collided with another vehicle, identified as a black Honda sedan.”
Authorities said the vehicles seized over the weekend were a Honda and a BMW.
The 16-year-old male cyclist who was involved in the hit-and-run accident died at the scene.
The boy was among a group of people riding bicycles near the stadium at about 4:30 p.m. when some kind of altercation broke out with the driver. Authorities said the cyclist was traveling southbound on Figueroa Street when he entered the stadium’s closed parking lot, where the driver followed him inside.
The driver of the sedan accelerated toward the cyclist, struck the victim and fled the property south of downtown Los Angeles, CHP said.
Details of the altercation that led to the accident have not been released.
“This is a tragic incident and 100% preventable and avoidable. It should never have happened,” said CHP Sgt. Dan Cain said at a press conference at the scene after the crash.
“We encourage that driver to come to the CHP station and talk to us. Tell us what happened. No parent should have to go through that.”
No arrests were reported Saturday. A detailed description of the driver and vehicle was not immediately available.
Investigators said they were interviewing multiple witnesses.
