Two people were injured Friday when a car crashed into a donut shop in Exposition Park.
Surveillance camera footage captured the shocking moment the driver crashed into the entrance of Michelle’s Donuts at 3783 S Western Ave., passing a stroller carrying a baby believed to be less than a year old.
A woman and a man were injured and hospitalized.
“He was telling me to go do something,” said witness Celestino Garcia. [customer] I’m stuck at the counter. ”
Witnesses jumped out after the cart’s impact took away a wall, a table and a chair where another customer was sitting, but fortunately the customer was unhurt.
“I come for coffee when we close, and I like to sit there. I always sit there,” Michelle’s Donuts customer Selelina Montez said.
According to police, the driver, an elderly man, appears to have mistakenly pressed the brake pedal instead of the gas pedal. The driver was uninjured in the accident.
“I feel lucky that I wasn’t there, but I feel sorry for the people who were there,” Montes said.
The woman suffered injuries to her hand and arm, and the man suffered a broken leg, authorities said. She was taken to the hospital, where her condition was stable.
“The baby will be okay. The man who was hit will be okay. I believe him. He’s still young,” Garcia said.
The store sustained significant damage and the owner told Telemundo 52 he doesn’t know when it will reopen.
Michelle’s Donuts is a family-owned business, and the owner said he’s worried because he doesn’t know what the next few months will hold.
The owner added that he is very grateful that the employee who was working on the couple was not injured.
