Two men were arrested early Monday morning after shootings and standoffs were reported at an apartment east of Fillmore. According to the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident began Tuesday night at a Rancho Sespare Part in the 2900 block of East Telegraph Road, around 11:51pm, when community members reported two men fighting in the apartment’s parking lot.
Deputies at Fillmore Station decided after replied that one of the men identified as 31-year-old Jose Ignacio Suarez had fired two rounds from the rifle in an unknown direction due to “gross negligence.”
When deputies tried to contact Suarez at his apartment and instructed him and the other residents to leave the residence, he refused, the sheriff said.
Additional law enforcement resources were called to the scene and after multiple announcements, Suarez left the apartment around 2:45am Monday. He was arrested for obstructing or delaying peace officers in the performance of their duties.
While deputies secured their apartment prior to a search warrant, they discovered a second man, 36-year-old Elasro Hartado, and were hiding inside. Hurtado has a warrant for outstanding misdemeanors, arrested on a warrant, under the influence of controlled substances, and delayed the peace officer, officials said.
That morning, around 8:15am, detectives obtained and executed a search warrant at Suarez’s residence. During the search, deputies recovered additional evidence related to the shooting, including a .22 caliber rifle.
Suarez was ultimately booked on suspicion of firearm negligence discharge, under the influence of armed controlled substances, obstructing the peace officer.
Suarez and Hartado were taken to Ventura’s pre-trial detention facility as they await a court date. The investigation is still underway.
