Authorities say two people have been killed and several others were injured in a shooting at the Grand Sierra Resort Casino in Reno on Monday morning.
Reno Mayor Hilary Sheeb told the Reno Gazette Journal that two people have died and at least four are in critical condition.
“That could be much worse,” Sheeve said. “We still don’t know how that started or who was involved.”
According to the department, Reno police officers responded to reports of active shooters at the resort around 7:25am. Officers shot and killed the suspect within minutes of arriving at the scene. Several people were hospitalized with gunshot wounds.
The suspect is in custody and there is no continuing threat to the public, officials said. Reno police have blocked areas near the casino and urged people to stay away.
Police Chief Kathryn Vance said at a press conference Monday that some victims had driven them to the hospital, and that the motives for the shooting remained under investigation.
“All the shootings took place outside the casino, but most of them happened near the Bullet area. But the scene stretches northward,” she added.
Reno Councillor Devon Reese also made a comment after filming.
“Tradically, life was lost in Reno this morning amidst a meaningless gun violence,” he wrote in a social media post. “My heart breaks for the victims, their families and our community. Reno is strong. But we are not immune to gun violence that cleans our country. We cannot accept this as usual. Not here, not anywhere.”
Grand Sierra Resort is one of the largest hotel and casino complexes in Reno. The 27-storey building features almost 2,000 rooms, a casino, spa and restaurant. Previously, it branded MGM and later branded Barry hotels and resorts.
