New details are emerging about the mostly teenage victims of a violent single-vehicle accident in Santa Ana on Sunday morning.
Natalie Garcia of the Santa Ana Police Station indicated that officers had been dispatched to the West Segerstrom Avenue and Southtownsend Street areas around 11:30pm for reports of a vehicle that had hit a tree.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers discovered six women (five women and one man) in the car at the time of the crash. Their preliminary investigation revealed that the 18-year-old male driver was moving at high speed towards the west of the Seagers Strom and missed a turn when the crash occurred.
At least two casualties were kicked out of the car, causing minor damage to a nearby black sedan, but no one in the latter car was injured.
Four victims were declared dead at the scene, the fifth victim fought for living in a local hospital, and the sixth person is listed in the “cemetery.”
Initially, Santa Ana Police Department said five casualties had died, but two people were currently hospitalized late in the afternoon.
