Two students were shot and the suspected gunman was killed in a shooting at a school in Palermo, the Butte County Sheriff’s Office said.
Just before 2 p.m., the agency said deputies were involved in an “active incident involving gunfire” at Feather River Adventist School, run by the Seventh-day Adventist Church.
The school is located 16 miles south of Oroville and approximately 90 miles north of Sacramento. The school, which serves children from kindergarten through eighth grade, has been in its current location since 1965 and had nearly 35 students, according to its 2022 update, according to the school’s website.
A sheriff’s office spokeswoman said two students were shot and taken to the hospital, with one taken by helicopter. The suspect is believed to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The students were taken from the school to the Oroville Church of the Nazarene in Oroville, and parents were asked to go to the church to reunite with their children, the sheriff’s office said.
According to the U.S. Census, the community of Palermo is a census-designated place with a population of approximately 9,500 people.
Approximately 3 miles long, according to the California Highway Patrol. Highway 70, where the school is located, has been closed to traffic. And that traffic was being diverted.
