The Trump administration is settling allegations of discrimination and anti-Semitism in exchange for restoring more than $5 billion in university freeze grants in sought $1 billion from UCLA.

In the proposed agreement sent to schools on Friday, UCLA will require the federal government to pay $1 billion for multiple installments, plus establishing a $172 million claims fund for suspected civil rights law victims that prohibit employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, gender, or national origin.

The Trump administration has already suspended $584 million federal grant from UCLA after the Justice Department announced it was violating the 14th amendment to the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the equal protection provisions of Title VI.

In a statement provided to Fox News Digital, UC President James Milliken said the university system is receiving and reviewing documents on offers.

“Early this week we offered to engage in good dialogue with the (justice) department to protect the university and its important research mission,” Miliken said. “As a public university, we are the custodians of taxpayer resources, and payments of this scale will completely destroy our country’s largest public university system, causing great harm to students and all Californians.

“Americans in this great country rely on the vital work of UCLA and the UC system for the technology and medical therapy that save lives, grow the US economy and protect national security.”

“Requiring $1 billion from a large publicly funded research institution is a misuse of taxes that undermine the university’s mission to serve students and the public,” he said in a statement. “UCLA, and the larger UC system, have taken meaningful steps to combat anti-Semitism and make it clear that protecting Jewish students, faculty and community members on campus is their number one priority.”

“They have been working to increase security, strengthen policies against hatred, and directly engage with the Jewish voices to better inform their approach,” he added. “If the administration’s mission is to truly protect the Jewish community, they’ll support the job. They don’t hamstring it with these strange requests that just take away the resources and services needed by students and faculty.”

UCLA pays a major settlement for discrimination claims from students in the “Jewish Exclusion Zone”

California Sen. Ben Allen said the district encompasses UCLA and that the Trump administration’s demands “harm the engine of America’s power, innovation and, in fact, greatness.”

The move came a day after California Gov. Gavin Newsom criticized the settlement between both Ivy League schools and the Trump administration, Columbia and Brown University.

“We’re not brown, we’re not Columbia. If we act that way, I’m not going to be governor,” the news said while speaking in San Francisco. “During the period. A complete stop, I will fight like hell to make sure it doesn’t happen.”

Colombia will pay more than $220 million since October 7, 2023 to resolve multiple federal civil rights investigations, including $21 million to resolve claims of anti-Semitic employment discrimination against Jewish teachers following the Hamas attacks in Israel.

Brown will fire workforce development organizations into states over the course of 10 years as part of his deal with the US government.

In July, UCLA agreed to pay $6 million to resolve a lawsuit filed by Jewish students and faculty regarding the school’s handling of anti-Israeli protests, including protesters banning Jews from parts of the campus known as the “Jewish exclusion zone.”

The lawsuit was brought by the Beckett Fund for Religious Freedom last year. This accused UCLA of “supporting and behaving” anti-Semitic culture, such as “segregating Jewish students and preventing access to the center of campus.”
