International students participating in UCLA are being detained at the US-Mexico border as President Donald Trump’s administration continues to cancel student visas nationwide.
In a statement, via the university student-run newspaper The Daily Bruin, Vice President of UCLA Strategic Communications, Mary Osako, confirmed that graduate students are in custody.
“UCLA has learned that an international graduate student has been detained by US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) while he was about to enter the United States from Mexico,” she said in a statement. “Students are under CBP’s control and we are actively working to learn more information.”

The Los Angeles Times reports that the students are female, but their identities have not been released yet.
As of Friday morning, it remains unclear why the student was in Mexico and why she was detained. She was attempted to return to the United States at the San Isidro border intersection just south of San Diego.
Daily Bruin reports that students protested on campus on Thursday, urging the university administration to “fight back” the Trump administration.
Dozens of students from universities across California, which were legally permitted in the United States, have revoked their visas in recent weeks, officials confirmed.
