MIDDTOWN, Manhattan (WPIX) – The CEO of United Healthcare was killed in a shooting in New York City Wednesday morning, officials confirmed to Nexstar’s WPIX.
Brian Thompson, 50, was shot in the chest just before 7 a.m. near a hotel on 54th Street between Sixth and Seventh Avenues, officials said. A video posted to the Citizen showed police tape on streets in Midtown as police arrived on the scene.
Thompson was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he later died. The shooting is being investigated as a possible targeted attack, officials said.

Mr. Thompson joined UnitedHealthcare Group in 2004 and became CEO of UnitedHealthcare in 2021. Prior to being named CEO, he led UnitedHealthcare’s government programs, including Medicare.
Previously, he worked at PwC.
UnitedHealth Group began its annual investor meeting at 8 a.m. Wednesday, but UnitedHealth Group CEO Andrew Whitty, who was scheduled to hold the meeting until 11 a.m., held the meeting at 9 a.m. I ended the conference early around 1:00pm.
“We are facing a very serious situation,” he said. “As of today, we will end the event… We apologize for the inconvenience, but we hope for your understanding.”
No arrests have been made. An investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
