Brian Thompson, CEO of UnitedHealth Group’s insurance division, died Wednesday morning after being shot in what appeared to be a targeted attack outside the Hilton Hotel in midtown Manhattan, a person familiar with the matter told CNBC. told.

A spokesperson for the New York City Police Department confirmed that a 50-year-old man was shot to death at 6:46 a.m. ET on Wednesday in front of 1335 Ave. Americus in midtown Manhattan. However, a spokesperson did not confirm the man’s identity.
According to the official report from the department, the man was shot in the chest and was unconscious and unresponsive upon arrival. Emergency medical services responded and transported the man to Mount Sinai West Hospital in critical condition, where he was later pronounced dead.
No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing, it added.
UnitedHealth Group was holding an investor day at the New York Hilton Hotel in Midtown. UnitedHealth Group did not respond to a request for comment.
The company did not confirm the shooting occurred on its investor day.
