The University of Southern California community continued to mourn after it was revealed that a student-athlete was among those killed in a fiery Tesla Cybertruck crash the day before Thanksgiving in Northern California.
Soren Dixon and two others died last week when the Cybertruck they were riding in burst into flames in Piedmont.
Dixon attended Piedmont High School and then majored in biological sciences at USC.
The other two deceased were identified as Jack Nelson and Krista Tsukahara. A fourth person in the truck survived.
The victims, all students at different universities, were at home in Piedmont for Thanksgiving.
Some of Mr. Dixon’s friends and classmates learned of his death during the holidays.
“During this break, we all hugged our loved ones a little tighter,” said Bronso Boyle, who became Dixon’s roommate during his freshman year. “Life can be taken away so quickly.”
Dixon, who was on the USC lacrosse team as a freshman, was active in his fraternity and always created a sense of community.
“He was looking for groups to go off campus, go to the beach, go surfing, go rock climbing. He was always trying to find people who liked the same things as him.” said Boyle.
On Monday night, school officials gathered at a vigil on Greek Row to honor Mr. Dixon.
“The world won’t stop, but we can’t forget him,” Boyle said.
Piedmont police say speed was a factor in the crash, but it may be too early to tell if there was something wrong with the car.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration told NBC Los Angeles it is aware of the crash and is gathering information from law enforcement and Tesla.
