The University of Virginia Visiting Committee voted Friday to close its offices of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) after President Trump’s executive order on DEI’s efforts in the federal government.

“Day took place at UVA,” Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin wrote on X Friday. “Today, the University of Virginia Visiting Committee voted to say no to illegal discrimination and say no to merit-based opportunities. Jefferson University students, and across the United States, are not ideological gatekeepers, but maintain unlimited intellectual freedom.”

The University’s Visiting Committee consists of 17 voted members appointed by the governor.

“This was a huge step towards restoring the value of Jefferson, who founded the university, and we all knew that we were all created equally. That’s exactly what it is: ending illegal discrimination and restoring merit-based opportunities.”

He said the university’s resolution also eliminates “all programs that violate the Constitution, civil rights laws, or of course, that ban President Trump’s executive orders that ban all of this and move places where they hide these programs or use third-party contractors.”

Youngkin said his administration has been opposed to DEI’s efforts in the state since his election.

“Of course we accept the idea that we come from diverse societies, diverse experiences, and of course diverse views. It’s one of our strengths as a nation, but we must eliminate illegal discrimination,” he explained.

“And now, we’re making a very clear statement at Flagship University that Day is being held at the University of Virginia,” he added.

The Ministry of Education has clarified DEI guidelines and states that Black History Month is not violating the order

The resolution stated that “the Department of University Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Community Partnerships will be dissolved, “add schools” and “moving acceptance programs to new organizations’ homes soon.”

The resolution did not specify what would be counted as a “acceptable” program.

The resolution added that the university’s president will update the board of directors on compliance within 30 days.

The board cited the university’s mission statement. [developing] The possibility of talented students from all classes of life in their solution.

The board “respects diversity, including diversity in thought and experience, encourages opportunities for all to promote an inclusive environment, enrich our grounds very much, and commit to providing a non-discrimination education for all students.”
