The Los Angeles County District Attorney filed a felony charge against a university campus security guard who was accused of shooting and killing two colleagues last week.
Jesse Figueroa, 40, faces murder, attempted murder and firearm accusations in the shooting at Spartan University of Aviation Technology in Inglewood on May 2.
Law enforcement rushed to campus with an active shooter report and found two female victims, the university’s dean and receptionist, suffering from gunshot wounds.
Police said the suspect fled the scene in a vehicle. Figueroa was arrested some time later in Koreatown.
“This was not a random act of violence within the city,” Inglewood Mayor James Butts told the Los Angeles Times. “This was an act of workplace violence.”
The two were hospitalized after a shooter fired at Spartan University in Inglewood on May 2, 2025.
Tuesday’s charges show that one of the victims succumbed to her wounds. Their identity has not been made public and prosecutors did not elaborate on the possible motives for the shooting.
“Students, faculty or employees should feel safe and secure in going to school,” District Attorney Nathan Hochman said. “This horrifying act of gun violence has shaken up the University of Spartan and our entire community.”
Hochmann said Figueroa is a convicted felon who is not legally permitted to own a firearm. He has been charged with strengthening several gun sentences.
Figueroa was scheduled to be arrested Tuesday. If convicted, he faces life in prison.
