Southern California is experiencing its first major storm of the year, blanketing residents in highlands with snow and catching dozens of motorists off guard in the San Bernardino Mountains.
Thousands of tourists and visitors reportedly descended on high-altitude areas in anticipation of fresh snow in the mountains. There, strict chain regulations are in place for all vehicles except four-wheel drive and all-wheel drive vehicles equipped with snow tires.
At Heaps Peak and Highway 18, officers at chain control checkpoints are stopping vehicles that don’t have tire chains properly installed.

The slippery roads have already caused dozens of spins and crashes, and in some cases caused heavy traffic jams while waiting for help from tow truck drivers and road crews.
In Daily Canyon, a Tesla Cybertruck was seen being towed by another truck that was also struggling on the snowy road. The Tesla was blocking a snow plow coming from behind.
Many people were seen trying to put chains on their cars on the side of snow-covered roads in less-than-ideal conditions.
Signs reading “Chains Required” have been posted in the area, urging motorists to carry chains, especially during the winter.
