South Dakota Rep. Dusty Johnson is the sole member of the state’s home and has announced a run for the governor.
Johnson is the chairman of the House GOP’s Main Street Caucus and is a member of the Bipartisan Problem Solver Caucus. He has been with Congress since 2019, following his job as vice president of a South Dakota-based engineering and consulting company. Before his executive role, Johnson also worked as a South Dakota Utilities Commissioner from 2005 to 2011. Meanwhile, he was appointed Chief of Staff for former government Dennis Dowgard.
The announcement, considered “format” by local media after it was rumored that Johnson would already be doing it, came on Monday at a campaign event and was paired with a video shared on social media.

“I was a great honor to work for you in Congress. We rolled up our sleeves and moved in the right direction, cut billions with wasted spending, secured the border with President Trump, and ultimately became tough in China,” Johnson said.
“These were important battles to build a better nation for our children, but their future doesn’t start far away. It starts here, at home, in South Dakota. So we need to hit the gas and give them a clear path to a bright future.”

Following the announcement, criticisms have begun to emerge online that Johnson does not adequately support President Donald Trump, claiming that his “constant” is a “hopeless lie.”
“That’s true,” Johnson told Fox News Digital. “Donald Trump took me to Mar Lago. I went to the Super Bowl with President Trump. I donated $10,000 to his reelection campaign years ago. He supported me in my 2020 race.
Johnson added that he is someone with “a longtime multi-year partner history” with Trump.

Johnson also said he has been proven to be “r-La. House Speaker Mike Johnson’s “Key’s Alley.”
Johnson, who recruited one big beautiful bill law in a Trump-approved Senate fight, said he supported a version of the bill passed by the House and expressed optimism that the GOP would pass in the Senate by the July 4 deadline.
