USS Nimitz Career Strike Group will expand to the Middle East

The USS Nimitz Career Strike Group is sailing from the South China Sea to the Middle East amid tensions between Israel and Iran, US officials told Fox News. Jennifer Griffin reports on the iconic development of the airlines of the oldest active aircraft in the US Navy.

If USS Nimitz is repealed next year, the US Navy will drop to 11-10 aircraft carriers for about a year. Recent budget documents show that new carriers will be postponed from the original delivery date.

According to estimates from the Department of Defense FY (FY) 2026 budget, Newport News shipbuilders were expected to deliver USS John F. Kennedy (CVN-79) to the Navy by July 2025, but that shifted to March 2027.

“The CVN 79 delivery date will shift from July 2025 to March 2027 (Preparation Approved TBD) to support the completion of Advanced Arrest Gear (AAG) certification and continue the Advanced Weapon Elevator (AWE) work.”

Both advanced arrest gear certification and advanced weapons elevator work are systems built into Ford class carriers.

The Newport News Building in HII in Virginia told USNI News it took lessons learned and applied them on new ships in its class.

“Specifically, the construction of John F. Kennedy (CVN 79) has made considerable progress when many Ford lessons were realized. Eliminating the timely implementation of lessons learned for Kennedy.” “In contrast, Enterprise (CVN 80) and Doris Miller (CVN 81) were able to incorporate, utilize and capitalize the Ford lessons they learned earlier in the construction process.”

The USS Enterprise (CVN-80), which is scheduled to be released in September 2029, was also shifted, but was then pushed back to July 2030.

USS Nimitz Career Strike Group is sailing towards the Middle East before schedule, US officials say

“The CVN 80 delivery date has shifted from September 2029 to July 203 due to delays in material availability and industry/supply chain performance,” reads a footnote in the document.

USNI reported that the Navy had originally planned to pursue Kennedy’s double-stage delivery approach, but since then it has switched to single-phase delivery and added two years of additional work to its ship design and construction contracts.

Under the new plan, Kennedy will be equipped to handle the fifth-generation F-35C Joint Strike Fighter Lightning II and equipped with a new Enterprise Air Surveillance Radar, USNI reported.

Second Navy Fighter Jets are outboard from Truman Aircraft carriers, pilots are ejected.

Officials originally thought that in terms of construction costs, the dual-phase approach would save the Navy money by saving Navy money and minimizing downtime between the Nimitz decommissioning and Kennedy delivery.

These delays occur because USS Nimitz is preparing to be obsolete.

Commissioned on May 3, 1975, Nimitz is the oldest active aircraft carrier in the US Navy.

Nimitz is currently on its final sea voyage in the Middle East as it is scheduled to be abolished in 2026.

The deployment is important as Nimitz was unfolding in 1980, when helicopters were part of a failed US effort known as Operation Eagle Claw to rescue American hostages held at the US embassy in Tehran. Since then, the US has been involved in a shadow war with Iran.
