First Fox: Veterans Affairs Director Doug Collins wrote this week to California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass.

The letter cites “violent” riots as the reason the VA decided to close outpatient care centers in Los Angeles for at least five days. It said local agency leaders made a “difficult decision” after the exterior walls of the building were tainted with graffiti that threatened the lives of federal immigration officials.

In total, more than 600 veteran appointments were affected.

“In other words, between your state veterans who failed to maintain law and order in Los Angeles and the medical care they acquired,” said the letter signed by Secretary Collins. “What hit me the most about the city and state’s reaction to this ordeal is that your main concern appears to be a virtue that shows President Donald J. Trump’s opposition to his efforts to restore law and order throughout the city, rather than protecting the hardworking Angelenos who are victims of violent rants and other criminals.”

Collins added that “slow responses to riots” in cities and states raise questions about the safety and security of veterans, particularly those who benefit from the federal government’s VA program.

The letter requested that both Newsom and Bass respond with the specific steps they are currently taking to restore law and order in the area where VA care centers are closed. It also requested updates to status for state and local investigations regarding the fouling of closed care centers, and state and local authorities must pay to repair damage to the building.

Both Newsom and Bass opposed federal intervention to quell the riots, calling it unconstitutional and excessive. Ultimately, with support from California Attorney General Rob Bonta, Newsom filed a federal lawsuit against the Trump administration seeking an emergency suppression order to prevent the National Guard and other military personnel from supporting immigration enforcement.

“Defendants, including President Trump and the Secretary of Defense, are seeking to bring a military and a “warrior culture” to the streets of cities and towns where Americans work and go to schools and raise families,” the Newsmom lawsuit states. “Now they turned their eyesight into California with devastating consequences and set a roadmap that continues across the country.”
