The Ventura County community lamentes the loss of a beloved 33-year-old man who co-owns the popular restaurant.
The violence unfolded around 7:30am outside the Grand Sierra Resort, one of Reno’s most popular venues
Authorities said the gunman walked to the Barrett parking lot at the casino hotel and pointed a handgun at a group of people. The firearm was initially malfunctioning, but the shooter quickly worked, making it work and fired multiple rounds when it escaped.
While fleeing, the suspect shot armed guards, shot dead someone driving in the parking lot, fired Reno police officers, and hit patrol vehicles before multiple officers returned fire and attacked the man and detained him.
The gunman, who has not yet been identified, was armed with multiple magazines, investigators said. He was taken to the hospital in danger.
Andrew Kanepa, co-owner of the Side Street Cafe in Newbury Park, was among the killed victims. The 33-year-old father of a six-year-old boy was remembered as a major reason why the cafe is considered one of the most popular breakfast spots in the community.

“He sits with people in the booth and shares them with them and makes them feel at home,” Kanepa’s friend Rick Bucaria told KTLA. “Andrew was very warm and welcoming. He was always very happy.”
Outside a family-run cafe that was first closed in months, friends and employees grieved the loss of the man they described as a dedicated community member.
“It was because of the family that was tied to it, and the love that comes from it and Andrew was a big part of that,” Israel Rodriguez said. “He was waiting for almost everyone in this town, probably.
After massive shootings at the 2018 Borderline Bar and the grille at Thousand Oaks, Kanepa helped organize the fundraiser.
“The community has fallen apart,” Rodriguez told KTLA. “He was very active in helping his victims. It’s a sad, tragic event that he is the victim now.”
After the loss of his father, GofundMe was organized to support Kanepa’s son.
