Ventura County Public Health officials are asking residents who have not yet been vaccinated because of measles before traveling during spring break.
Five confirmed cases of measles have been reported across the state this year, according to the Department of Public Health. One of these cases was detected in Orange County and was considered travel-related.
The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health reported additional lawsuits Tuesday.
VCPH recommends that children get two doses of MMR vaccines. This starts with the first dose at 12-15 months and the second dose at 4-6 years. Two doses of the MMR vaccine are approximately 97% effective in preventing measles.
Measles is caused by a highly contagious airborne virus that spreads easily when an infected person breathes, sneezes, or coughs.
Symptoms include:
Cough nose with high fever (which can spike up to above 104°F), red, watery eyes.
A rash often occurs 3-5 days after symptoms begin. The rash begins as flat red spots on the hairline face and spreads downwards on the rest of the body.
If not addressed, measles can cause severe complications, particularly in children under 5 years of age, pregnant women, and people with weak immune systems, including pneumonia, brain swelling, and even death.
There is no direct treatment for measles, it is just a precaution.

“We’ve seen a lot of experience in our lives,” said Dr. Urdin Castell, Ventura County Public Health Medical Director. “We may end up with a county measles case, but the best way to reduce the likelihood of it being incurred is to make sure that the best way to protect the health of our communities, especially our children, is to make sure that we are up to date with the MMR vaccine.”
There have now been more than 250 outbreaks in West Texas and New Mexico, with two unvaccinated people dying from measles-related causes.
The disease was last very common in the US in 2000.
