The victim of Oxnard’s stab wounds was saved by California’s first outdoor blood transfusion, officials confirmed.
Ventura County Fire Department crews, along with Oxnard firefighters and police, responded to reports of the stab wounds on Thursday. Authorities did not immediately say what time or where the stab occurred.
On the scene, the crew discovered that the stabbing victim was unconscious and had unstable vital signs. The patient’s identity has not been revealed as of Saturday night.

While transporting the seriously injured victim to the medical centre, the VCFD said paramedics quickly prepared and administered blood units.
“The response was quick and effective,” the department said in a release. “The patient’s vital signs improved along the way. The skin signs were normalized, allowing the patient to regain consciousness and talk to the crew.”
The VCFD said the historic event highlights the success of a highly coordinated, multi-institutional initiative.
The agencies involved include VCFD, the Ventura County Department of Emergency Medical Services, and Ventura County Medical Center.
“The groundbreaking use of field transfusions in this case already shows the potential to save lives,” the VCFD release states. “Ventura County is proud to lead the way in which we can set new standards for trauma care across California.”
