Two people died when a small plane crashed into his home over the weekend in Simi Valley. He was identified by the coroner on Monday as a 69-year-old man and his 36-year-old son.
Matthew Belkovitz, son of Westlake Village and Thousand Oaks, were the only people on the plane when he crashed Saturday near the intersection of Southwood Ranch Parkway and Hymeadow Street in the Wood Ranch district of Simi Valley.
Their cause of death was listed as multiple blunt instrument injuries, according to the coroner’s office.
Brody, the family dog, also died in a fiery collision.
The RV-10, a popular homemade plane sold in the form of a kit, crashed around 2pm on Saturday, struck two homes and fell into flames. The wreckage was scattered between the two houses, one of which was swirling smoke from the roof.
Details on the cause of the crash were part of an investigation by the National Road Safety Commission. The final report may come later just weeks before NTSB releases its preliminary findings.
NTSB spokesman Peter Knudson said once the plane’s wreckage is documented, it will be moved to a safe facility for evaluation.
Investigators will also look at plane maintenance records, weather forecasts, air traffic control communication records, witness statements, pilot backgrounds, and available surveillance videos.
In January, another van’s RV-10 crashed into a Fullerton warehouse, with the pilot about to make an emergency landing. The pilot and his teenage daughter were killed and people inside the building were injured.
According to a preliminary report issued by the NTSB, the plane appeared to have Ajar holding the door while it was flying.
