A Ventura County woman was caught on camera after raiding a seven-month pregnant street vendor after denounced her for racist remarks earlier this week.
Bender Mary B said it wasn’t the first time the woman had targeted her. However, this time a woman was arrested and now Mary is suing her.
Police have identified the invader as Julie Christine Sanchez, 56, of Simi Valley.
It happened on Monday, April 14th, just before 4:30pm near the intersection of Torrance Street and Brandon Avenue.
Mary told KTLA’s Rachel Menitoff that she was working in the area when Sanchez began accusing her. While that was happening, Mary manages to pull out her cell phone and record the encounter.
“I don’t want you to go down this street,” you can hear Sanchez saying it’s blocking Mary’s path. “I’m leaving, you’re not down this street anymore.”
Mary can be heard responding to Sanchez’s attack in Spanish.
In response to Mary’s Spanish, Sanchez says, “American? English.”
Sanchez is seen grabbing Mary’s cart while she puts the dog on the leash.
“I told them not to fall down the street anymore, so I (bleep) meant that,” Sanchez said. “You will reduce the value of my property.”
AFAR’s home surveillance footage then shows Sanchez using Mary’s push cart to push her anticipated mother into the ground.
“She demanded I speak English, but I couldn’t, and she pushed my push cart and defeated me,” Mary explained at a press conference.
Mary’s lawyers believe this is a deliberate hate crime, and they are currently suing lawsuits.
“This woman from Simi Valley attacked Mary, attacked the unborn baby and attacked the street vendor community in Los Angeles,” said civil rights lawyer Christian Contreras.
Humbel Guisar, another civil rights attorney for Contreras and Mary, is now asking the Ventura County District Attorney to file a hate crime charge against Sanchez.
“If you’re going to attack people because they look different, and you speak different languages, and you’re going to hurt them, we’ll come after you, we’ll sue you in court, and we’re going to use the legal system to hit you where it hurts,” Gizar said.
Simi Valley Police said he cited Sanchez with the battery and summons. And now it’s up to the DA’s office to prosecute.
