Police arrested a customer who intentionally drove to an Inglewood Carmax dealer Saturday afternoon, injuring eight people and leaving two in danger.
The Los Angeles Police Department said the phone was called at 2:03pm to report interference with a customer at Carmax, located in the 8600 block of Lasienega Boulevard.
Carmax said the customers were assessing the vehicle and the authorities did not immediately provide details regarding the interference.
According to LAPD, the customer left the building, got into the car and entered the dealership, causing injury to several employees and other customers.
The driver then attempted to escape, but LAPD quickly detained him in a nearby location and arrested him. Police said the suspect is currently under the control of Inglewood PD.
Authorities did not immediately reveal the suspect’s identity.
La County Fire said the incident was mistakenly reported to their department as an active shooter.
However, upon arriving at the dealer around 2:10pm, the crew upgraded the call type to “vehicle” and requested additional resources.
According to LACFD, two of the total eight patients were seriously injured and were taken to the hospital with injuries, while the other patients suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene.
LAPD said the individual injured at 5:45pm was in stable condition
“This afternoon, a customer passed through a store in Inglewood, California, attacked and injured several of his peers and customers who were currently in hospital care,” Carmax said in a statement Saturday evening.
Carmax said it is implementing an action plan and is working with authorities on the investigation.
“We appreciate the authorities’ prompt response to this horrifying event. This is an ongoing investigation, so please turn the authorities to ask questions at this time,” Carmax said. “The safety of our peers, our community and our customers is our number one priority. We are deeply saddened by the event and our hearts come to everyone affected.”
