Speaking in Los Angeles on Friday, Vice President JD Vance criticized California and local politicians, particularly Democrat Gavin Newsom’s government and La Mayor Karen Bass, for effectively declaring an “open season in federal law enforcement” to “put federal law enforcement at risk.”
Vance said he was “shocked” to hear that he was posting the names, addresses and even members of his family members of a federal law enforcement officer in Los Angeles.
“Gavin Newsom and Karen Bass have to stop this insanity,” Vance said. “All the law enforcement officers I spoke to today said they all felt that the local leaders, the mayor and governor, are encouraging these far-off left agitators. What is the legitimacy of this?”

Vance said he was told by a local law enforcement official that he had been told there were Border Patrol officials who needed to arrest someone when they were out, and violent criminals who were probably also illegal aliens, putting their lives at risk.
“Why do they have it?” he added. “Because those people laid eggs on local officials. Gavin Newsom and Karen Bass say it’s basically an open season for federal law enforcement by treating the city as a sanctuary city.”
Newsom is a voice critic of President Donald Trump’s use of the National Guard and Marines, calling it illegal and immoral, as local police have quelled anti-ice riots in Los Angeles.
The governor has launched a lawsuit against the federal government to stop the use of the military in response to the riots. The district court ruled in favor of Newsom, but the Ninth Circuit on Thursday ruled that the Trump administration would allow the military to use the military to support local officials.

Protesters will face police on June 14, 2025, outside a federal building in downtown Los Angeles for an anti-Trump “No Kings” demonstration in the city that was the focus of protests against Trump’s immigration attacks.
“They have treated border patrols and border enforcement in some way as an unlawful force, not what they are, and this is the law enforcement agency of Americans who are trying to enforce American national law,” Vance said.
“So when Gavin Newsom encourages violence and riots, he encourages people to face our great Border Patrol officers, he puts the lives of federal enforcement absolutely in danger.”
Commenting on the 9th Circuit ruling, Vance said, “In the past few weeks, there have been illegitimate efforts to send federal resources to secure cities he refuses to secure, and it is interesting that what I said yesterday said is the full and proper use of federal law enforcement.

“The president has a very simple proposal for every city, every community, every town, every person, whether large or small. If you’re going to enforce your own laws and protect federal law enforcement, you’re not going to send the National Guard because it’s unnecessary,” he said.
“But if violent rioters burn the great American city to the ground, of course, we will send federal law enforcement to protect those elected by the President.

“What I’m looking at here today is a huge tragedy when the mayor and governor encourage citizens to put the lives of police and law enforcement officers at risk,” he said. “It is heartbreaking to see and I thank God.
