The Washington Post is being occupied online and by the White House for “pathetic” reports that liberal news outlets call the “mystical” decline of fentanyl flowing across the border.

Fentanyl is a dangerous drug and is often trafficked to the United States across the southern and northern borders by cartels and other criminal elements. According to the CDC, in 2024, fentanyl was associated with 48,422 deaths in the US.

During his campaign, President Donald Trump vowed to fight a war with fentanyl traffickers by increasing border security and cracking down on illegal immigration. Since taking office, Trump has deployed US troops to the southern border, targeting cartels and cross-border criminal groups as “foreign terrorist organizations,” and attacking cartel leaders with sanctions.

According to the Center for Immigration Research (CIS), the seizure of fentanyl by US law enforcement is “a key indicator of the ports of entry at the tropical border and the broader smuggling between them,” but it has fallen 50% since the November election. The CIS says the significant decrease indicates a “significant reduction in total clusters of fentanyl smuggling.”

The Washington Post reports on the decline, saying that US seizures at the tropical borders have declined by almost 30% compared to the same period in 2024. However, the outlet says the drop “represents something mysterious.”

“After confiscating an increase in fentanyl, the opioid that has driven the deadliest drug outbreak in American history, US officials are facing a new, mysterious reality at the Mexican border. Fentanyl seizures are plunging,” he wrote.

Among the reasons that may be listed by the outlet are that cartels are finding other ways to smuggle drugs into the US, cartels’ internal conflicts, shortages of ingredients, and reduced demand.

Though confused by the reasons for the decline, the Washington Post assumed that “public health officials are concerned that the Trump administration’s budget cuts could hurt programs that promoted overdose antidotes and addiction treatment.”

This article was widely laughed online by conservatives.

R-Wis. “The Washington Post reports a “mystical drop” of a fentanyl attack at the southern border,” Sen. Tom Tiffany said. The mystery has been solved! The Trump effect is at work.”

Popular conservative influencer Charlie Kirk said, “Four months after the Trump administration, the Washington Post is marveling at the “mysterious” drop of a fentanyl attack on the Mexican border.

The official Homeland Security X account also replied, “That’s not a mystery. On the first day, [President] Trump has shut down our borders to drug traffickers. ”

“From March 2024 to March 2025 fentanyl traffic at the tropical border fell by 54%,” DHS said.

“The world has heard the message loudly and clearly,” DHS said.

Another White House spokeswoman, Abigail Jackson, told Fox News Digital, “The decline in fentanyl attacks at the border is merely a mystery to a reporter for the Washington Post, who is suffering from Trump’s stigma.”

“As of March, fentanyl traffic at the Southern border had dropped more than half since the same period last year. Joe Biden’s open border was still terrorizing the United States,” Jackson said. “Everyone else knows the simple truth. President Trump has shut down our borders to illegal drug traffickers, and Americans are safe for that.”

The Washington Post did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.
