People at the Whale Watching Expedition had a very special experience when the humpback whales stepped out of the boat on Sunday.
Passengers were on Katalak, a vessel run by Davey’s locker watching.
A spokesman for Davey’s Locker said the “strange” giant weighed around 60,000 pounds and was estimated to be 40-50 feet long.

“The strange humpback whale approached the boat, remained nearby, and just stepped in from the boat, providing an unforgettable show of rolling and investigative action,” spokesman Jessica Rodriguez said. “These unique moments known in the whale watching community as “robbers” occur when a whale is interested in a boat, and sometimes choose to carefully inspect it for more than 30 minutes. ”

Rodriguez added that while the boat is being “robbed”, the captain must turn off the engine and wait for the whales to swim.

Water off the coast of SoCal is known for its seasonal whale migration, but this encounter is amazing as the whales begin to interact.
“Meetings like this are extremely rare and are moving deeply for those lucky enough to witness them,” Rodriguez said.
