Surfers at Orange County hotspots were fighting more than just a big wave earlier this week.
The sea lions acted proactively towards the wedge surfers in Newport Beach, ousting them out of the water, and standing on the ground on the sandy shore.
“This action lasted for more than two hours,” said YouTube user @dingosaidso, who recorded the incident and other memorable moments. ” [sea lion] Sometimes they disappear, reappear in the lineup, chasing everyone down the coast. Sea lions will always chase people out of the sand, but have never seen them get more than a few feet from the edge of the water. ”

The Pacific Marine Mammal Center has condemned sea lions’ behavior regarding the ongoing issuance of domo acid poisoning caused by naturally occurring algae.
“The effects of brain damage from domoacid when ingested allow sea lions to exhibit aggressive behavior, disorientation, loss of motor skills, agitating, or complete coma,” said PMMC. “This long-term exposure can lead to permanent brain damage and behavioral abnormalities as seen in this video.”
Domo acid has also been criticized for playing a role in the spurt of the diseased pelicans being treated in Huntington Beach.
“For safety, if you have an illness or injured marine mammal in Orange County, please take the distance into the water and call the rescue hotline (949-494-3050Ext. 9),” PMMC said.
