Wayfarers Chapel, a historic Rancho Palos sanctuary that was closed due to landslides, may have found more stable ground.
Chapel leaders say they found a location about a mile west of the old lot where rapid land movements threaten hundreds of homes. Scary conditions will only get worse, and in May 2024, Leader announced plans to dismantle the Chapel, a national historic landmark and popular wedding venue.
This week, Chapel announced on its website that it had found a “ideal new location” next to Rancho Palos Verdes City Hall on the old Battery Burns military site. Chapel said it still needs to “secured” the site and raise funds for reconstruction.
Chapel executive director Dunbarchet said he previously expected a full reconstruction to be nearly $20 million.
According to the website, leaders will be rebuilt in visitor centers, museums, cafes and gardens, with guests being treated to the same cleaned ocean views.
The historic chapel was abused by recent landslides with crushed windows, warped metal framing and fresh cracks in the parking lot. Chapel leadership initially considered trying to rebuild it in the same location, but made it impossible to exacerbate the landslide. Future new sites will not be part of the city’s landslide zone.
The 100-seat glass and wooden chapel was built in 1951 and was designed by architect Frank Lloyd Wright Jr., the son of famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright.
