Waymo will expand autonomous ride services across major Los Angeles areas starting Wednesday, delivering the second most major service expansion in the region this year.
The expansion gives riders access to full stretches of Playa del Rey, Ledera Heights, Echo Park, Silver Lake and Sunset Boulevard, according to the company. Waymo said it would also provide a direct route from Mid City to Inglewood and Westchester via Lasienega and Lovelaea.
“We are extremely proud of this progress. We are the first (autonomous vehicle) service to operate on a practical scale and we continue to see the growing demand and trust in our services,” the company said in a statement.
With the expansion, Waymo will operate over 120 square miles in Los Angeles County.
Last week, autonomous car services in downtown Los Angeles stopped service in downtown Los Angeles after protesters destroyed them and set fire to several Waymo vehicles. It is unclear why the protesters targeted the Waymo vehicle run by Google’s parent company Alphabet.
Waymo also announced new service coverage in the San Francisco Bay Area and Silicon Valley on Tuesday. The company also operates in Phoenix, Arizona and Austin, Texas.
The company has been operating in San Francisco for a long time. White autonomous taxis are the common sight there. Following months of testing, they began offering unmanned vehicles in Los Angeles in November 2024.
