Caltrans is warning drivers to expect major delays as they begin a series of extended weekend lane cuts along the 405 highway through the Sepulveda Pass.
From 10pm on Friday, August 22nd to 5am to 5am on Monday, August 25th, the expressway will be reduced to at least three lanes in each direction to accommodate construction. Closures will affect on- and off-ramps, and drivers are urged to take different routes and use public transport.
Here’s what drivers need to know:
Northbound I-405
It has been reduced from Santa Monica Boulevard to three lanes just north of the Sunset Boulevard Ramp.
Southbound I-405
Reduced to 3 lanes from just north of Sunset Boulevard to closure of Wilshire Boulevard on eastbound ramp: Sunset Boulevard/Church Lane On/Off Ramp Wilshire Boulevard on Ramp westbound
Proposed detour:
To access the northbound I-405 from Santa Monica Boulevard, move east on Santa Monica Boulevard, then north to the Moraga Drive-on Ramp on Sepulveda Boulevard. To access the southbound I-405 from Sunset Boulevard, move north on Church Lane, then south on Sepulveda Boulevard, then south on Onramp, west of Santa Monica Boulevard.
These weekend closures recur around every two weeks, about 25 weekends. Caltrans points out that schedules may change due to weather and operational needs.
Residents and businesses near the construction zone may experience noise, vibrations and dust during the work period.
The closure is part of a $143.7 million I-405 pavement rehabilitation project aimed at increasing safety, improving traffic flow and extending pavement life between Vanny and Westwood.
Drivers are recommended to check for real-time traffic updates in Caltrans QuickMap and visit the Project web page for more information.
