Weezer Bassist’s wife Jillian Lauren, accused of shooting at LAPD: Explainer

Jillian Lauren, wife of Weezer Bass Player, has entered the spotlight this week after a strange event that culminated in allegations that the bestselling author shot by police this week with police attempting to kill a police officer.

Here’s what we know:

What happened that led to Lauren’s arrest?

The chaos began around 3:25pm on Tuesday with three suspects fleeing a hit-and-run on the 134 highway.

The Los Angeles Police Department was scrutinizing the area surrounding Eagle Rock for suspects in response to requests for assistance from the California Highway Patrol.

Manhunt led officers to the back of the residence near where Lauren and Schliner live, police said. There, the officer said he saw Lauren standing in the backyard of the property next to her, depicting a handgun.

Lauren pointed her gun at the officers and repeatedly ignored orders to drop her weapon, police said. She then fired fire, department spokesman Jennifer Falksh said in a statement to the Times.

Lauren was attacked by a gun police officer and fled to her house. She later left her property and was taken to hospital by the Los Angeles Fire Department, police said.

Lauren’s manager, Charlie Fusco, said there was no comment on the case late Thursday, and her lawyers did not respond to the Times’ request for comment.

After the shooting, police determined that Lauren was a resident of the house and had no connection to Hit and Run.

They looked into the Shellcase evidence, reviewed video camera footage and booked her on suspicion of attempted murder of a peace officer, Faulk said. Police recovered a 9mm handgun from their home.

Meanwhile, the Highway Patrol took the alleged hit-and-run driver around 4:20pm, according to agency spokesman Daniel Keene. He was found stripped off by his boxer in a nearby backyard.

Law enforcement investigated the location of the hit and rank rush on 134 highways, leading to manhunts, shootouts and allegations against Gillian Lauren.

The highway collision included three vehicles, and according to Highway Patrol, one person was sent to the hospital with moderate injuries. Police said no other two suspects were found who fled the hit and run.

What’s coming next for Lauren and Schliner?

According to Los Angeles Jail records, Lauren was released from custody around 10pm on Wednesday. She is scheduled to appear in court on April 30th.

As of Thursday afternoon, no charges had been filed against Lauren.

According to an office spokesperson, LAPD had not yet presented a lawsuit to the La County District Attorney’s Office against Lauren. The DA’s office ultimately decides what to submit to her, if any.

In California, attempted murder of a peace officer without a plan is punished by a five-, seven- or nine-year sentence. Using firearms can enhance the sentence.

Meanwhile, Schliner is scheduled to perform at Coachella on Saturday, along with his Weather band Mates Rivers Cuomo, drummer Patrick Wilson and guitarist Brian Bell.

Schliner was asked about his wife’s injuries and arrests when he met with the media outside his home Thursday.

“She’s fine, thank you for asking,” he told TMZ while walking the four dogs.

“See you at Coachella!” he adds, appearing to promote the show. This is the band’s fourth appearance at the Indian Festival.

Weezer is a Los Angeles alternative rock band that rose to fame with the 1994 “Blue Album” and has since won multiple Grammy Award nominations, selling over 35 million albums worldwide.

Meanwhile, Lauren has not yet spoken publicly or issued a statement after her arrest.

Who is Gillian Lauren?

Lauren is a New Jersey bestselling author known for her personal memoirs and research storytelling. She was recognized in her 2010 memoir, Some Girls: My Life, for about a year in the mid-1990s about her experience living in the harem of Prince Jeffri Borkia in Brunei.

She shares two sons with Schliner, whom she married in 2005. She wrote about her struggle with infertility and her journey to motherhood through her adoption in her 2015 memoir, Everything Wanted. Her writing has appeared in publications such as The Times, The New York Times, Salon, Vanity Fair, and Harper’s Bazaar.

In 2023, she published “Monsters Facing America’s Most Prolific Serial Killer: In-person” based on an interview with serial killer Samuel Little. The book served as inspiration for the Starz documentary series, “Staying Against a Serial Killer.”
