“We’re at work”: US Attorney Bill Essay defends immigrant crackdown

(In California Politics) – US Attorney Bill Essaylie defends President Donald Trump’s immigration enforcement efforts in Southern California, saying that state law is the reason why people with no criminal history are caught up in the attacks.

The essay said he was hosted by California political host Nikki Lorenzo. Federal agents are restricted by California’s sanctuary state law, prohibiting local law enforcement from working with federal immigration authorities. An LA Times report released this week suggests that the majority of immigrants arrested in Los Angeles in early June were not convicted offenders.

“In all other states, we can enter county jails, screen criminal immigrant status, take them directly from prison and deport them,” the essay said. “We can train officers to screen for immigrants, so when we meet people commit criminal acts, we can focus on those people and deport them. We can’t do that in California. So we need to go out into the community and we have to do a wide range of immigration enforcement businesses.”

The essays also blow up with Laiol Karen Bass’ recent claim that federal agents are not chasing dangerous criminals, instead chasing hardworking immigrants through swap meets and parking at Home Depot.

“We’re at work,” Essayri said. “We’re enforcing the law written by Congress, and if Karen Bass, who was in Congress, didn’t like the law, she should have changed it when she was in Congress. But Democrats had full control of the House, Senate and the President, so they didn’t do anything about it. This country has illegally created the situation we’re looking at now and her party.

The essay was appointed in April as U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California, the largest federal judicial district outside of Washington, D.C. The essay said his priorities in his new role are removing DOJs.

“We’re back to the Department of Justice’s bread and butter,” Essayri said. “We are chasing organized crime, violent crime, cross-border criminal organizations, chasing children, people who commit crimes against terrorism.

The interview also mentioned the attacks on California’s Homeless Fund, Federal Immigration Agents and the 2026 California Governor Race. Within California, this weekend’s politics will air next time.
