Orange County officials issued health advisors after the West Nile virus was discovered in some of the mosquitoes in the area.
“The OCMVCD has confirmed positive mosquito samples for the West Nile virus in cities in Anaheim and Garden Grove,” the Orange County Mosquito and Vector Control District said in a post Tuesday.
Four positive mosquito samples represent the first confirmed viral activity of the year.
The OCMVCD provided some recommendations to prevent mosquito bites.
Eliminate standing water around your home. Make sure all windows and door screens in your home are in good repairs. Wear a repellent containing DEET®, picaridin, lemon eucalyptus oil, or IR3535. Contact the Mosquitoes and Vector Control District in Orange County to report dead birds and neglected pools.
“Residents can take precautions by wearing mosquito repellents when mosquitoes are most active (at dawn/dusk),” the official agency said.
The West Nile virus is a well-established mosquito-borne disease that has spread to the United States and is well-established in most states, including California.
