Starting Wednesday, travelers flying around the US will need to use actual IDs or state-issued identifications that meet federal standards to avoid extra waiting at the airport.
Homeland Security Director Christine Noem said travelers who have not obtained their actual ID can still fly, but “we may detour to another line, but there’s an extra step.”
“We ask people who don’t have real IDs to arrive early. There may be delays being processed through security checkpoints,” said Jason Pantages, Federal Security Director for LAX.
This means that over 40% of people eligible for real IDs in Los Angeles County face additional TSA screenings. The DMV said as of May 1, 4.9 million people in LA County had actual IDs.
In Orange County, 59% of drivers receive TSA-approved identifications, with Ventura adoption rates of 57%.
In addition to the actual ID, there is an acceptable identification at the TSA checkpoint.
