The 11-mile section of Coast Road was largely off limits to everyone except residents, first responders and crew working on repairs and cleaning in the Palisades fire area.
Drivers may encounter intense traffic when they access the fire zone under restrictions. According to the mayor’s office, the number of firefighter checkpoints will increase from five to 16, restricting Palisade’s access to residents, employers, employees and contractors.
A speed limit of 25 mph is also enabled on PCH.
Drivers were advised to monitor the debris clearance crew and other initial responders.
Traffic lights should flash red lights and be treated as slow stops at Topanga Canyon Boulevard, Big Rock Drive, Laska Beach Club and Carbon Canyon Road. Stopping in burn areas is prohibited, and the right lane of southbound PCH is subject to the occasional closure for debris removal.
Gov. Gavin Newsom has announced that the road between Malibu and Santa Monica will be reopened by the end of May. Newsom welcomed the planned reopening on Friday as a major step forward in Fire-Recovery’s efforts.
“The reopening of highways along the Pacific coast represents a critical step in Malibu’s continued recovery from recent wildfires,” said Mayor Marianne Riggins, Malibu. “While there are still major challenges, this development will help restore limited access to coastal residents and tourists.”
