Memorial Day is also considered the unofficial opening of the summer travel season. Americans are expected to run away in record numbers over the long anniversary weekend, despite rattling the US travel industry.
Auto Club AAA predicts that over 45 million people (1.4 million more than last year) will venture out from at least 50 miles of homes between Thursday and Monday, with the majority going by car. The domestic travel record for 44 million people on holiday was set 20 years ago.
AAA fuel trackers show that drivers can expect to pay less gas this year. The average US price on Wednesday was $3.18 for a gallon of regular gas compared to $3.60 a year ago.
The AAA predicts that 39.4 million people will travel by car over the weekend. This is the highest number of holidays since AAA began tracking in 2000, with an additional 3.61 million travelling in the air, up nearly 2% to 3.55 million last year.
Aviation safety has fallen into the hearts of travelers after an air collision in January, in which passenger jets and US helicopters in Washington, DC killed 67 people. There were also some close calls.
