When polls close at 8 p.m. across Los Angeles County on Election Day, the process of counting millions of ballots begins almost immediately, but continues for days and possibly weeks.
The California Secretary of State estimates that approximately 5.6 million Californians are registered to vote as of January 2024.
What happens after voting ends?
Immediately after voting centers close on Election Day, election workers will deliver ballots to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputies at designated check-in centers. Sheriff’s deputies then transport the ballots to a secure ballot processing center in Industrial City.
The first vote count report will be released between 8:30pm and 8:45pm on election night. This number also includes mail-in ballots received before Election Day, whether returned by mail or dropped off at a drop box or vote center.
A second nightly update will occur between 8:45 and 9 p.m., and will add ballots cast at vote centers before Election Day to that total.
Final results after election night
Votes in Los Angeles County will be counted during a 30-day period known as the official election canvass, which begins Nov. 6.
