Good Friday, a religious day for Catholic and Christian rituals, is not a federal public holiday, but it is closed on that day.

Good Friday comes before the Easter celebration, and is one of five Christian celebrations to commemorate the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ on Easter Sunday.

It is observed by religious communities, but is not recognized as a federal holiday. The US Department of Commerce lists 11 federally certified holidays, including New Year’s Day, Rev. Martin Luther King’s birthday, George Washington’s birthday, Memorial Day, National Independence Day in June, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.

Twelve US states recognize Good Friday as a state public holiday: Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, New Jersey, North Carolina, North Dakota, Texas, Tennessee. In these areas, state offices are adhered to.

Whether you’re observing Good Friday or running Easter-related errands, you may be closed, open, or shortened opening hours.

Things closed on Good Friday

NASDAQ Composite, an equity market index that includes all stocks listed on the NASDAQ Stock Exchange, is closed in compliance with Good Friday. The New York Stock Exchange will also be closed on Good Friday.

Catholic and Christian schools are usually closed in compliance with holidays. To confirm that student campuses are closed today, call the administrative office or check the child’s academic calendar.

Some public schools, including the Los Angeles Unified School District, have already been closed for spring break ahead of Easter holidays.

Does Good Friday affect postal services?

The US Postal Service is open on Good Friday, so postal delivery is not affected.

This is the latest online list of USPS observed holidays.

Open on Good Friday

Banks usually follow the Federal Reserve holiday schedule and make sure most banks are open on Fridays. You will need to reach out to the preferred bank branch to ensure that business hours are not affected.

Most public libraries are open on Good Fridays, but are closed on Easter Sundays, including the Los Angeles Public Library location. See here for a list of observed holidays.

Most clothing retailers, malls and grocery stores are open on Good Fridays, but be sure to check Easter Sunday closures and opening hours in advance.

You should always call prior to your visit to any of these locations to see if the time is short or if it is closed in compliance with Good Friday.
