San Bernardino County officials announced the identity of the aide who was killed in a fatal crash at a Victorville intersection early Monday.
Deputy Hector Quebus Jr. was described as a six-year veteran of the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office, assigned to Victorville Station in 2022.
Cubas, whose wife and their two children survived with their parents and siblings, was a man and a trusted colleague in the family, Sheriff Shannon Dykas said.
“(Quevas) is a police officer and can deal with the hardest gang members, turn around, talk to the kids and make sure they know they’re safe and they’re in shelter,” the sheriff said Monday evening.
“He is an epic and great guardian and a great father, and we will suffer from his losses and support his family for quite some time,” added Daikas.
Cubas’ loved ones gathered at the crash site late Monday to mourn the loss.
“No matter what he put his mind, he was trying to accomplish,” said his assistant brother, Joshua Kuebas. “He’s certainly a legend.”
“He had a family and wanted to make a difference and raise a family,” said Pedro Rivera, Quebas’ uncle. “Today was one of the saddest days of my life.
The fatal crash that occurred during the pursuit left a trajectory of destruction as the lieutenant’s patrol SUV was split into two parks scattered near the intersection of Seneca and Hervead roads.
The driver involved in the collision said 22-year-old Ryan Dwayne Turner Jr. Dikas said he would not seek bail for Turner, who was previously arrested in another car chase.
A repeated scene unfolds on the streets of San Bernardino County as Quebus’ body was taken to the coroner’s office to stop and salute the deputy who had been killed by firefighters, law enforcement officers and civilians.
