Officials illuminated controlled burns at the location of the home’s explosion in Pakoima, and wild video filmed by KTLA shows the moment when the flames hit more explosives and sent massive fireballs into the night sky.

The original explosion in the 13,500 block of Remington Street occurred around 9am Thursday, putting a 24-year-old man in a state of crisis. Los Angeles Fire Department Chief Tomlinson told KTLA 5’s Carlos Herrera on Saturday morning that the man would remain in critical condition with 50% of his body burned.

According to the LAFD, the explosion could have been caused by the production of fireworks by a 24-year-old man. If he recovers, he is expected to face numerous charges.

A total of 63 homes have been ordered to evacuate, and the timeline for return remains unknown, but Tomlinson said some residents refused to leave and others simply not homes. The dwelling where the explosion occurred was partially destroyed, but the other structures were not damaged.

Filmed late Friday from Sky5 showed flames from controlled burn explosives that did not explode in the original explosion, sending massive fireballs into the air and illuminating them from the fireworks.

The controlled burns continued as planned on Saturday morning, Assistant Assistant Tomlinson added, precautions including covering nearby homes with fire-resistant gels and plastics and building sand holes to prevent water spills.

“We used diesel fuel to mix it with hay to begin a controlled burn,” Tomlinson said. “It slowly burned through the house, and as you guys saw dramatically in your video last night, it hit the explosives we were worried about.”

“The purpose of the controlled burn was to control these hazards and reduce the additional hazards that could be found there,” he elaborated.

The slightly good news is that neighbors affected by the fire could return on Saturday.

“We are trying to bring our neighborhood back to normal… and ultimately we will be reducing our footprint even further so that we can reposition more homes. [and] Tomlinson told KTLA.

Controlled burns are set to continue on to another until Saturday afternoon.
