Wildfires causing poor air quality as temperatures rise in Southern California

Large wildfires in the central coastal region have degraded the quality of SoCal air as temperatures heat up.

As of Tuesday morning, the Gifford fire had burned more than 82,500 acres, but 7% were contained after it first erupted northeast of Santa Maria on Friday afternoon. Although it is primarily on fire in rural San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara County, evacuation orders and warnings are effective in more populated areas.

Smoke from wildfires affects air quality throughout the state, including Southern California. In addition to air quality issues, weather officials are advised residents that high temperatures will rise this week.

“Temperatures will hover between Tuesdays and Tuesdays, warming up to 4-8 degrees on normal Wednesdays and Thursdays, especially in areas far away from the coast, and smoke from the Gifford fire can sometimes cause air quality issues.” “While we expect slight cooling trends over the weekend, the temperature will remain far from the nearby coast.”

The heat has encouraged the NWS to increase the risk of wildfires, in addition to the general effects of high temperatures, such as heat-related diseases.

“Keep hydrated, limit outdoor activities during afternoon hours, check back seats and pay particular attention to anything that can cause fire,” says the NWS.

Some smart SOCAL residents were keeping that advice Tuesday morning. Ellina Abovian of KTLA 5 was in Santa Clarita’s Central Park and interviewed people who were out even though the air wasn’t as fresh as possible.

One man named Christian has launched a campaign called #Justshowup to inspire Santa Clarita Valley residents to climb the famous steps of Central Park 100 times.

“We’re in Southern California, so sometimes all fires don’t allow us to breathe. [I encourage residents] Come out and get [the exercise] You can get it and then you can continue with your day,” Christian said.

There are already four people who have completed 100 stair climbs, including one woman who did that in just three days. She, the other three, and the next 96 people who will achieve the feat will feature their names in the #JustShowup shirt.

Elina eventually climbed the stairs with Christian, who was carrying the camera, and photojournalist Dave Lopez. As KTLA anchors Frank Buckley and Jessica Holmes pointed out, they all completed the walk with a relatively easy time.

And while it’s not exactly clear how many stairs Elina (and Dave) could undertake on Tuesday, Elina said she’d do it at least “a few more times” at 8am.
