A wildfire that erupted Tuesday afternoon in the San Diego County community on Lakeside threatened the structure and encouraged forced evacuation.
Firefighters said the fire in the eastern part of the county had burned 340 acres by 7pm. Containment was 10%.
Authorities issued evacuation orders in rural areas of unorganized communities in the El Monte Valley, near Mount El Pitan’s base. The area has a horse ranch, just south of the riverbed of the San Diego River.
The Monte Fire was reported to have started just north of El Monte County Park.
Images broadcast on KNSD-TV before sunset showed flapping leaps towards the ridge top as swirling grey smoke rose from the valley floor. The fire helicopter released a drop of water.
KNSD-TV reported that the fire progresses and the pace of fire growth slows amid repeated droplets and fire retardants from the aircraft.
The fire is located just west of El Capitan Reservoir, one of the largest reservoirs in the city of San Diego’s reservoir system. It was burning about nine miles northeast of El Cajon and 22 miles northeast of downtown San Diego.
The San Diego National Weather Service Office warned of an increase in the risk of a fire on Tuesday and the rise caused by intense winds and local humidity in the mountains in San Diego, San Bernardino and Riverside counties.
A smoke recommendation was issued, and officials warned that smoke would blow east and warned Alpine.
“The winds weaken overnight, but continue to blow east. In some communities near Lakes, Alpine and Descanso, smoke can fall near the ground,” the County Air Pollution Control District said. “By early Wednesday morning, the winds could change and blow smoke north, blowing towards the San Diego County estate and Ramona.”
A temporary evacuation site was established at Walmart Supercenter, 13487 Camino Canada in El Cajon, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office.
Large animals can be evacuated to Diane Jaco Breakside Equestrian Park, 11055 Moreno Avenue on Lakeside.
“Take your pets,” an official from the county animal services agency urged social media. “All pets should be contained if possible. Identify identification information in the collar and carrier.
